The
band has played in France, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Scotland,
England, Wales and the Guernsey International Music Festival for
the past two years. Other festivals include the Isle of
Bute, and Oxford’s fun in the parks and the Lord Mayor’s
Parade. They have supported successful Irish acts such as
the Wolftones, and have been guests on various radio shows in
Oxford, Guernsey and abroad.
The
music of “Henry Marten’s Ghost” is a mixture of
traditional Irish/Scottish reels, jigs and hornpipes. Other
material includes well-known Irish songs, waltzes and other dance
tunes, which are very popular at gigs. A selection of their
music can be purchased direct from the band or, by contacting the
numbers below.
Performances
can be tailored to suit requirements. Thus private and
corporate functions can be catered for. The music of “Henry
Marten’s Ghost” has launched many successful Guinness
products in England and abroad. Weddings, Wakes, Funerals
and other social events have not escaped the ghostly brand of
Gaelic music and banter.
Henry
Marten comes from one of the signatories of Charles 1 death
warrant. Born in Oxford in 1602 he became a lawyer and
parliamentarian. He supported the Irish during the
Cromwellian massacres and urged Parliament to broker peace with
the Irish in 1664. This had him tried for treason where he
was imprisoned in Chepstow castle. He died there in 1680.
A tower now bears his name.
