... take their name and inspiration from an old bagpipe tune of the same title which commemorates a Scots Border raid into England. Crossing Borders in both time and space, Oer the Border Band explore the musical traditions of the Borderlands of Scotland and England. The eternal themes of Cross Border Conflict, Love and the Supernatural permeate their music. They use both ancient and modern instruments and are equally expressive in a powerful rendition of a Border Ballad air as they are enervating with a wild reel or jig.
The music is accompanied by historical background and humour to suit concert recital, workshops and festivals. For larger events we can augment with clarsach and percussion.
Wild and beautiful music full of the passions and varied traditions of Scotland.

Gordon Mooney was the prime mover in rescuing the Scottish Border Bagpipe and Scottish Smallpipe from extinction, and he is one of Scotlands finest performers on these instruments. He also plays Northumbrian smallpipes, Highland pipes and whistles. He is President and founder member of the Lowland and Border Pipers Society and has been made a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries for his research and publications.
Shona Mooney is 15 years old and has played fiddle and danced since age 5. She was voted in 1999, Borders Young Entertainer and in July became the Pacific NW Junior Fiddle Champion. She has recently performed to great acclaim at the Edinburgh International Festival.
Barbara Mooney plays bassoon, flute and whistles and enjoys arranging music for the group. She studied music at York University and now teaches woodwind in the Borders. She has played bassoon for many years in Scotland, in various amateur and professional groups.
| Live Reviews Music of the Pipes Series, Both sides the Tweed, St Cecilias Hall, Edinburgh International Festival 1999: Their
imaginative arrangements and Gordons original
tunes, such as Lammermuir, proved a big hit and brought
another instalment of this musically successful series to
a stirring conclusion. It was right to
have Gordon Mooney to demonstrate how the Northumbrian
accent has nudged its way into the Border Pipes.
This was a excellent set with his wife Barbara on flute
and bassoon and daughter Shona on fiddle, complementing
his robust, big-toned style. Robert Burns Night at the Sanders Theatre, Boston USA: Gordon Mooney with Alasdair Fraser was mesmerising on the Lowland pipes, bellows blown bagpipes that produce a softer more sombre tone. His piping was both meditative and urgent. |
